They stretch for about 50 miles downstream from Kingston, Ontario. The Canadian islands are in the province of Ontario, the US islands in the state of New York. The 1,864 islands range in size from over 40 square miles to smaller islands occupied by a single residence, or uninhabited outcroppings of rocks that are only home to migratory waterfowl. To count as one of the Thousand Islands, emergent land within the river channel must have at least one square foot of land above water level year-round, and support at least two living trees. Watertown is a city in in upstate New York; it is situated approximately 20 miles south of the Thousand Islands, and 70 miles north of Syracuse, NY. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 27,023, an increase of 1.2% since 2000. The US Army post Fort Drum is near the city. Named after the many falls located on the Black River, the city developed early in the 19th century as a manufacturing center. From years of generating industrial wealth, in the early 20th century the city was said to have more millionaires per capita than any other city in the nation. Residents of Watertown built a rich public and private architectural legacy. It is the smallest city to have a park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the celebrated landscape architect who created Central Park in New York City. Fort Drum Located in the picturesque Thousand Islands Region of northern New York State, this installation is in one of the most unique and beautiful areas of the United States. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles from Canada, with the Great Lakes to the west and the Adirondack Mountains to the east. Home to the 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum's mission is to provide quality installation support to our Soldiers and their Families that is equitable to their quality of service and sacrifice to our Nation. DUTIES (include but not limited to) Assesses and resolves complex social, economic and psychosocial problems that may impact on service member's medical treatment as outpatients by providing direct casework services, to include screening, assessment, treatment, referral, consultation and education and in conjunction with DoD PDH-CPGs.
