The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.Health EducatorThis position is available as an internship/professional development opportunity for Florida students currently enrolled in a Masters in Public Health program (MPH).This position will serve in the Health Promotion and Education, Epidemiology, and Office of Health Equity programs in the division of Community Health. In addition to assisting with program goals and objectives, the incumbent will also be responsible for a Community Health project demonstrating an understanding of skills and knowledge learned during the employment period. Incumbent will also be required to choose one public health program within the Florida Department of Health Hillsborough outside of Community Health to work with for a 2-4-week period if available.Health Promotion and EducationThe Health Promotion and Education (HPE) program is responsible for providing educational programs and training along with coordinating health services in the community to improve health outcomes in Hillsborough County. The HPE program also acts as the contract manager for school health funds and services. Educational programs include, but are not limited to, the Diabetes Prevention Program, Diabetes Self-Management Program, Get into Fitness Today (weight management), childhood lead poisoning prevention, health literacy and the importance of breast and cervical cancer screenings. Outreach to local medical providers is also a role this position will assist with to increase community knowledge of and referrals to our programs.Office of Health Equity (OHE)The OHE program works to promote, protect and improve the health and well-being of disparate and under-served populations through wide-ranging programs and policy initiatives. Areas of focus include: Family Planning, Community Dental, Health in All Policies, Health Literacy, Health Start and Community Engagement initiatives. This program assures that the social determinants, burden and impact of diseases on vulnerable populations are acknowledged and addressed through research, advocacy, surveillance, education, training, and program development. The incumbent will assist in data collection and tracking as it relates to the Community Health Improvement Plan and Community Health Assessment. This position will also attend community partner meetings as a representative of the FL Department of Health in Hillsborough County.EpidemiologyThe Epidemiology Program is responsible for surveillance and disease control activities of over 100 reportable diseases or conditions in Hillsborough County. The incumbent in this position will assist in performing investigations of cases and outbreaks of reportable illnesses, provides direct client education and assists with data input and analysis. This position will also assist in providing information to the clients and community on the condition being investigated and educate clients on necessary preventive measures. Will contact appropriate daycare, school, food service or health care agency to determine if other cases exist and to provide education to those agencies. This position will also assist in the drop of specimen collection kits and the transport of specimens to the state lab.Responsibilities include:Work as a team in providing education/training on health and chronic disease topics to the lay public, community groups, worksite groups and other health professionals.Assisting with projects designed to meet objectives of Healthiest Weight Florida and Florida Healthy Babies Programs.Promote the agency and its programming to the community and health professionals to increase referrals to diabetes, diabetes prevention, and weight management classes.Assist in designing, developing and presenting literature, information brochures, program materials, presentations on community health topics, as assigned.Contacting medical providers and clients to complete epidemiology reports.Collect data by phone interviews or field visits related to investigations of reportable diseases.Minimum Qualifications:Holds a Bachelors Degree in a public health or related field.Currently enrolled in at least the first year of an accredited Masters of Public Health (MPH) program in the state of FloridaExperience providing presentations or training sessions to groups.Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.5Experience using Microsoft Excel or Access programsThe ability to multi-task and communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences is needed.Other Desirable Qualifications:Currently enrolled in second year of an accredited MPH Program in the state of Florida.Trained as a Lifestyle Coach to teach the CDCs Diabetes Prevention ProgramImportant Notices- Please be advised:All responses provided to the qualifying questions for this announcement must be verifiable on your resume.This position requires a security background check and/or drug screening and participation in direct deposit. *Note: You will be required to provide your Social Security Number (SSN) to conduct this background check.The successful candidate will be required to complete the Form I-9 and that information will be verified using the E-Verify system.
