The Spinal Cord Injury Service is located 100% at the Seattle division, and is considered a \\\"Center of Excellence.\\\" The Spinal Cord Injury Service consists of a 38 bed CARF-accredited rehabilitation unit, outpatient clinic with urodynamics lab, and therapy department. DutiesThe Nurse Manager is responsible for the coordination and management of care on the SCI unit at the Seattle division. The Spinal Cord Injury Unit specializes in rehabilitation, medical/surgical issues, annual evaluations, respite and hospice care. The patient populations include: rehabilitation, pulmonary/GI/GU conditions, skin breakdown and cancer. The Nurse Manager will ensure the care line program is congruent with the Medical Center and VISN 20 mission and vision. The Nurse Manager is a professional nurse who holds twenty four hour accountability for the management of the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Unit within the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. The Nurse Manager is responsible for the management of nursing practice and nursing operations within the SCI Unit. He/she facilitates an interdisciplinary approach to high quality, cost effective and customer focused health care. The Nurse Manager directly supervises all nursing personnel in the SCI unit. He/she oversees the implementation of the vision, mission and values of the facility within his/her defined areas of responsibility. He/she is engaged in administrative nursing practice characterized by both increased complexity of clinical decision-making and enhanced skill in nursing management. He/she provides leadership in day-to-day operations and input into the strategic planning process for the attainment of organizational goals. The Nurse Manager will independently direct nursing personnel in quality management activities and will utilize the nursing process and current standards of care as a foundation for quality improvement activities. The Nurse Manager works collaboratively with other VA PSHCS health professionals, participating as a member of the multidisciplinary team. He/she evaluates patient education programs for patient/family teaching and/or counseling groups for specific patient population with interdisciplinary involvement. The Nurse Manager demonstrates the ability to work effectively with various levels of personnel. He/she uses appropriate channels of communication and functions as a consultant to others in analyzing and addressing communication problems. It requires repositioning patients, assisting with transfers from wheelchairs/stretchers and transporting them to other departments or facilities. Mechanical devices are available and are required to be used for heavy or difficult to lift clients. The work may involve pushing or lifting in excess of 45 pounds and going up and down flights of stairs. The position requires visual (corrected to 20/30 or better with color discrimination) and auditory acuity at a level to provide safe and effective nursing care. The position requires the nurse to work for periods of time with arms above shoulder level or with neck in a fully flexed or extended position. The nurse may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia or psychiatric disorders. The nurse many be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures.
