Job Description Aviva Family and Children\'s Services Mission Statement Aviva believes every child and every family in our Los Angeles community deserves the chance for a brighter future. We provide compassionate support, therapeutic services, and guidance to at-risk children and families. Job Summary Under the supervision of the Resident Counselor Supervisor, the Resident Counselor provides direct support to the youth residing at the Wallis Annenberg Center as well as the community students at the Aviva High School. Resident Counselors are responsible for the safety and emotional well being of residents and community students. The Resident Counselor is required to mediate conflicts between residents/students, model appropriate attitudes and behaviors and maintain professional relationships with residents /students and staff. The Resident Counselor supports AFCS mission by serving as role models to those in his or her care. Essential Functions Provide a warm, safe, structured and nurturing environment. Supervise protect and care for residents at all times and community students during the school day. Complete all necessary paperwork in a timely manner. Hold residents accountable for their behaviors, positive/negative as outlined in resident counselor handbook. Assist in teaching daily living skills. Supervise, protect and care for residents at all times and community students during the school day Redirect and encourage residents/students to follow the daily schedule and participate in activities Promptly de-escalate and mediate conflicts between residents/students Model appropriate attitudes and behaviors Actively participate in residents daily activities Assist in planning and supervising recreation, social, cultural and craft activities Keep all client information confidential Drive residents/students to appointments and community outings as needed Promptly report missing residents/students Promptly report any possible safety and/or sanitation problems to supervisor Attend all in-service trainings and scheduled staff meetings Maintain an objective, professional relationship with residents/students at all times. Regularly check residents rooms to ensure they are in bed (overnight position only) Sensitive and responsive to the cultural and socioeconomic differences among AFCS client population Actively participate in quality improvement project The Resident Counselor will take on special projects or additional duties as assigned by the Resident Counselor Supervisor, assistant director, and or director of residential treatment. Competency Requirements Ability to read, write, speak and understand English Ability to demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making skills Ability to remain calm, respond appropriately and/or follow protocol under difficult and demanding circumstances Ability to follow protocol during an emergency Ability to work collaboratively with coworkers, treatment staff and administration Knowledge of facility safety response procedures Knowledge of Title 22 regulations preferred Ability to relate to adolescent girls with behavioral and emotional difficulties Education and Experience Bachelors degree in Psychology, Social Work or related field OR 4 years of experience working in a residential setting required Previous experience working with severely emotionally disturbed youth preferred 1 year experience in a group home or residential setting strongly preferred Certifications/Licenses PRO-ACT certification CPR Certification First Aid Certification Valid California Drivers License Additional Position Requirements Tuberculosis clearance Department of Justice/Fingerprint clearance Must meet Child Abuse Indexing requirements Satisfactory completion of health screening Proof of legal eligibility to work in the United States Satisfactory driving record Delegates Authority To N/A Physical Demands While performing the duties of a Resident Counselor, the employee is often required to sit, stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to bend, run and drive. Work Environment The work environment is inside and outside. The noise level is moderate to loud.
