Along its western and southern boundary run the Rio Chama and Rio Nutrias, both of which are highly recognized in the fly fishing community of New Mexico for their abundance of trout. Nearby Abiquiu Lake and the renowned Ghost Ranch have become known around the world thanks to Georgia O'Keefe's celebrated paintings. Abiquiu Lake is a mere 30 minutes south from Ranchos del Vado. The ranch borders along its eastern boundary another privately held large ranch.

Hunting is allowed across the ranch, with elk, deer and turkey being quite abundant. Should you prefer water sports, Heron Lake is a wake-free lake whereas El Vado and Abiquiu Lakes allow motor boating of all varieties. Skiers and snowboarders will not have it very far to Pagosa Springs, Durango and Wolf Creek in Colorado or Santa Fe.
