This pipeline of talent has brought life:changing innovation to your fingertips for more than 160 years.Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group): Work on Fiber Research and Development projects under the guidance of a Scientist focused on new and improved fiber processes for Corning. In this role the individual will be responsible for a workstream of a project currently underway. The specific project role for the summer will be tailored to match the need and the interests of the individual student with focus on fundamental understanding of the process issues.Day to Day Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include process understanding and fit for use in Corning businesses as well as R and D. Activities may include: experimentation; laboratory simulations; data analysis; production interface : all geared toward fundamental understanding in support of Fiber Process Research.Travel requirements (please note if international): :5Hours of work/work schedule/flex:time: 40 hrs, typical 8am : 5pm with potential flex timeRequired Skills: - Rigorous and hands:on experimentation techniques (design, execution, analysis, documentation) - Basic data analysis, data display, and statistical skills; Computer skills (Excel, Word, etc.) - Team Player : Ability to interact with Research, Development, Engineering, and Manufacturing Personnel - Ability to understand and discuss how process/equipment measures relate to product performance - Effective Communication skills : verbal and written plans, results, and recommendationsEducation and Experience: PhD student in Materials Science or Chemical EngineeringDesired Skills: - Knowledge of glass and general materials background - Organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple prioritiesSoft Skills: - Self:motivated and results oriented : Drive things to final implementation - Reliable and detail:oriented.
