VINTAGE WESTERN ELECTRIC CRANK WALL PHONE - IT'S AUTHENTIC, COMPLETE, AND WOULD LOOK GREAT ON YOUR KITCHEN WALL
THIS IS A VERY NICE AUTHENTIC WESTERN ELECTRIC WALL PHONE WITH A CRANK HANDLE.
It is complete in every respect - Please see my photos - Unlike other vintage wall phones listed on eBay and CraigsList, this wall phone is in every way complete and authentic.
The internal wiring and components are in excellent original condition without any corrosion, discoloration or defect.
The Tiger Oak Case has the original finish without alteration.
The exterior has only been cleaned with a damp cloth to remove dust.
The earpiece/receiver is original and in very good condition internally and externally without physical or cosmetic defects.
The cradle for the earpiece has the original painted finish in good condition without physical or cosmetic defects.
The mouthpiece and assembly are excellent condition without any internal or external physical or cosmetic defects.
The original paint on the bells is still shinny and there are not any physical or cosmetic defects.
All authentic Western Electric wall telephones have black painted exterior metal components. Most other wall telephone listings have bare metal exterior components which have had the original painted finish removed.
The working earpiece/receiver is original and in very good condition internally and externally without physical or cosmetic defects.
The cradle for the earpiece has the original painted finish in good condition without physical or cosmetic defects excepting slight wear.
The working mouthpiece and assembly are excellent condition without any internal or external physical or cosmetic defects.
The original paint on the working bells is still shinny and there are not any physical or cosmetic defects.
I have installed a new cloth cord to match the original on the earpiece/receiver to replace the worn original cord.
The beautiful grain of the tiger oak wood case has the original finish. There are some small paint splatters on the top of the case and on the left side but when hung on the wall at the correct height the ones on the top cannot be seen.
All of the original wiring is intact and as it was 100 years ago - there has not been any alteration to the original wiring.
The dry cell battery chamber is without damage from leaking batteries. I can provide three replica #6 dry cell batteries typically used in wall phones for an additional $130.00 US.
The original wiring diagram is intact and in excellent condition on the inside of the phone case door.
The case measures about 21" high X 9" wide X 9" deep.
To better understand vintage wall telephones, in broad terms there are two types of vintage telephone systems, which are defined by the power source.
Originally, they used a "local battery" system, which meant every telephone had its own battery (usually a few dry cells) to power the voice circuit, and a hand cranked magneto to power the ringer.
When a subscriber wanted to make a call, he'd crank the magneto. If there was a central switchboard, it'd cause a tiny metal
"drop" to fall, alerting the operator to a call. (That's why in old movies, people would crank the phone to make a call.)
In WW II, the field telephones used this type of system. The advantage of such a system was simplicity. The disadvantage was batteries at the subscriber's end had to be periodically replaced (They may have also worked better when the phone was a considerable distance from the central office, as in rural lines or on railroads).
The newer system used today is known as "common battery". All power comes from the central office. To make a call, the subscriber simply lifts the phone from the hook-switch. A relay at the central office detects the off-hook and either alerts an operator or sends out a dial tone.
When the call is completed, going on-hook will again signal a relay at the central office. The local battery system required the
callers "ring off" at the end of a call. Local battery systems were used in a great many places for many years.
There are the phones with a magneto built in for such service. Many railroad line phones were of this design.
This vintage telephone has been in the family for three generations and this is by far the best vintage wall phone I have seen in antique stores, or advertised on eBay or .
For whatever it's worth, my grandmother told my mother that it was installed in their farmhouse around c1912.
